Here at CRLiterature, we wanted to find a fun way to get the community reading -- and reading together. What better way is there than to have a new book to enjoy as a group every month?

How do you participate in Book Club? Here are your simple instructions:

  • 1. Acquire the book.
  • 2. Read the book.
  • 3. Stay tuned to the CRLiterature group for discussion journals and chats.
  • BONUS: We will be giving out arbitrary prizes to some participants each month!

We are hoping to select books that push the community's boundaries, in terms of what we're already reading, but that will also have mass appeal. We are also going to be choosing books that are widely available across English-speaking nations (for now Book Club is English-only) and across e-reading platforms. By rotating moderators, we are hoping that selections will be diverse, both in terms of style and genre, and in terms of author background and point of view.

We are also excited at the possibility of Book Club being site-wide. So, yes, it is open to ALL deviants, at any level of reading and writing -- not just the literature community!

And...there may be rewards for reading as many of the book club books as possible. Remember Pizza Hut's BOOK IT? We do. And we loved it. We want to reward reading here, too. The more books you read this year, the better chance you have at year-end rewards! And the more participation we get, the better the year-end rewards may turn out to be.  :plotting:

Are you as excited for CRLiterature Book Club as we are? (The correct answer is YES!)

Your moderator for June, the first ever month of Book Club, is PinkyMcCoversong. Together with the CRLiterature team, she chose THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY by Douglas Adams. We are hoping this will be a fun, breezy read with which to kick off your summers. Also, Pinky will be reading it for the first time with you!

Adamsthehitchhikersguidetothegalaxy by PinkyMcCoversong

More details to come, as we get closer to our launch date! For now, check out our FAQ!

Book Club begins on June 1, and the first book club Journal will post then. Go find a copy of the official book club book, and get your read on! We'll see you this summer!

There's lots of spaceships in it, hovering in the air exactly the way bricks don't.

We thought it would be fun to do one of those books that people often say they wish they'd read, or want to read eventually.  Plus, seems like the book has something for everyone.  SFF, humor, criticism, literariness...

before i leave my comment here i must first ask for clarification... pizza hut's BOOK IT? what's that about?

ok on with things.

this is a great idea. i shall... try. however i have a list of excuses ready ;p :
1. i'm lazy
2. i'm not a big reader (i like writing more... is this ironic?)
3. school is on and i'm a busy bee... (yes it's summer but i have my tests in june and then summer semester and then... tests and then another year... (and so on and so on...)
4. i'm lazy
5. books may be dificult to acquire...
6. i'm lazy

i'm :typerhappy: not reader-happy (plus i was planning on getting the hunger-games books to read over the summer...) but i would love to be a part of this. so this is exciting :la: it's good to widen one's perspectives, points of view and experiences and knowledge and open new vistas of thought.

SO! aside from reading these books, are there stuff involved? (like chat events, contests etc. if so please keep in mind time differences and that we are not ALL american  (and not all have the same weekends either :paranoid: )

as for the first book- what if we've read the book or part of it? (didn't get very far in this one...) and what if we try to read it but can't understand it or tolerate it for long? (there's a fairly long list of books falling under this category where i'm concerned)

anywho, rock on! and get with gread! :$$:

We've tried to set up the chat events so that they are accessible for people all over.  You can check out the schedule we posted here: grimface242.deviantart.com/jou…

If you are a writer, you SHOULD be a reader.  Writers need to read more than they write.

If you've already read the book, or part, please feel free to read it again with us! Many folks participating have already said that this will be their second/third time reading.  For many of us, it will be our first.  I think that's part of what will make book club great.

Check out our FAQ, though!  Should answer some questions.

thanks for the link. i've never heard of july's author...

omg noes! what a calamity! how did you manage to pick those times? :nuu: the first date is at 11PM on the eve of my physics final (the hardest one of them all and one of the most important ones as well...) and the second date is yup you guessed right! at 11PM on the eve of the retake of same said exam! :tears:

so hopefully i'll pass the first time  and will be able to attend the one on june 29th though i'm in poor shape thus far...

i hope july's dates won't fall on classes which i can't miss... i believe the biggest one will be on thursdays and most of them will be afternoon and evening classes...

maybe you can do some dates on saturdays or fridays  i know there are others to take into account and i'm not the only one plus i'm kinda singled out being here but since you're going for diversity in reading may i suggest diversity in times as well? so that if we miss a few at least we won't miss all of them... (some for everyone)

:nuu: write write write! :typerhappy: the thing is i have an attention disorder. it's mild but still i have problems concentrating through a lengthy book unless it's exceptionally fascinating. unlike movies where all i need to do is sit for 90 min. (so my bar for movies is far lower), with books it's actively pushing on if it's not pulling you on at every page which is far harder. plus i'm a very slow reader which doesn't help.

i did read the FAQ right after posting the comment... sorry about that :iconteheplz: and thanks for all the fish... (i saw the movie :) hehe)

We opted out on doing Saturdays since a lot of people use Saturday for family time.  Most of the admins in the group are in the US, with one of us in the UK.  So we're working hard.  Part of the problem is that it's very hard to find a time when people are awake in both hemispheres.

Try not to lean too hard on a disability as an excuse not to read.  A lot of us have disabilities, too, and we work around them.  I'm a slow reader and have attention problems, but I just set aside extra time to read and turn off my TV earlier than I would otherwise.

ah yes but i have much on my plate and if i don't use those as excuses i'll have a couple less to go on ;)

i get that but it seems unfair to set all dates to suit americans and dismiss the rest of the world... sharing is good...

i sometimes stay up 'till 1AM (and once until 3AM) to go onto chats... others can do the same sometimes too...

i'm not telling you guys what to do. this is just how i feel about it.

We've not set all dates to suit Americans.  We've tried to find dates that suit as many people as possible at once.  Especially when the organizers are mostly in the US/UK, and the site is based in Los Angeles.  By setting a 1pm PST start time, we're trying to make it possible for folks in different parts of the world to participate, rather than having it at like 7pm, which would be tougher.

the site is global. so many countries! what does it matter if it's based in LA?

i get that. most people i've met on dA are americans hands down. maybe this is the reality around the whole site  well i put my opinions out there because i consider myself an artist and that's what artists do write? ;)

It matters that it's based in LA because a lot of the staff are therefore based in LA/the states.

We are trying our best to accommodate as many people as possible.  Sometimes it comes down to the lowest common denominator.

This sounds cool. Question. Do we all read  at the same time, i.e. read the first 5 chapters for the next chat or do we read the whole thing and then meet at the end?

:iconpinkymccoversong:
PinkyMcCoversong Featured By Owner May 3, 2014  Professional Writer
It will be loosely structured.  The first discussion, about halfway through the month, will cover the first half of the book.  The chat at the end will cover the second half and also thoughts on the book as a whole.

There's a 96% chance your local library will have it. It's a pretty popular book. Good luck finding it!

Oh, they have it -- but it's usually out! :) I've read it before and love it -- used to have a copy but it got lost in one of my moves :( -- so I look for it fairly frequently.

Is it just the first one, or the trilogy of five? lol.

A month.  We plan to start on June one, have every have read half way by June 15, and then have it finished by June 30.

It's a fairly popular book, so I'd imagine your library has it.  If you're outside the US, and want to buy, try bookdepository.com -- they have free worldwide shipping.
